DESCRIPTION:Explore the areas of Pennsbury Manor not seen on your regular tour. Visit the servant’s quarters of the Manor House and hear stories of gossip and intrigue amid the beautiful exposed wood beams. Travel down to the footprint of Pennsbury Manor and see a portion of the original foundation from 1684. Learn of the personalities involved with rebuilding this important historical home and you decide – should the house have been built? Ascend the stairs of the Kitchen House\, which was the home to many of the enslaved at Pennsbury. Find out what happened to them and if any gained their freedom. Your last stop will be the cemetery. This is your chance to pay your respects to the people who were so much a part of Pennsbury Manor. Join in a Quaker tradition of placing a sprig of rosemary on the graves of those who meant so much to a place so special. Please note that this tour involves climbing stairs and walking on uneven surfaces.\n \nTours last approximately one hour and begin at 1:00 pm\, 1:30 pm\, 2:00 pm\, 2:30 pm\, 3:00 pm and 3:30 pm. Cost is $15 per person. Pennsbury Society members get in FREE.

SUMMARY:The Holy Experiment: Violet Oakley Mural Studies Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The Holy Experiment: Violet Oakley (1874-1961) Mural Studies\, will be on display at Pennsbury Manor\, from June 27\, 2014 through the end of the year. The exhibit features thirteen original oil on canvas studies for murals\, commissioned in 1902 to decorate the Governor’s Reception room located in the Pennsylvania Capitol Building. At that time it was the largest commission given to a woman artist in the country.  After she was invited to paint these murals\, Oakley traveled to Italy in an effort to see firsthand the colors and effects of Italian Master Artists.  She also studied in England to research William Penn’s life and influences. Each mural\, according to Oakley\, depicts events that influenced Quaker ideology\, The study series centers on the founding of the Colony as a testament to the life and vision embraced by William Penn.  The ideals of religious tolerance and individual liberty permeate the series.  The murals were unveiled in 1906\, and continue to impress a wide audience of visitors to the Capitol of the Commonwealth.

DESCRIPTION:The 1681 Charter of Pennsylvania will be on exhibit from March 9 – 16. Don’t miss this special opportunity to view the original Charter of Pennsylvania. England’s King Charles II used the charter in 1681 to grant the land that is now Pennsylvania to founder William Penn. It is sometimes referred to as the state’s “birth certificate” and was Penn’s personal copy. This is the first time the Charter has left Harrisburg since 1960 and it will be on display for one week only. It is the document’s first time on display at Pennsbury Manor.
