SUMMARY:Monthly Book Club: "The Good Earth" - By Pearl S. Buck
DESCRIPTION:Each month Pennsbury Manor hosts an open book club and invite all to participate in lively and educational discussions. The group meets the first Saturday of each month at 10am in the Visitor Center. Light refreshments are served. For details contact our Book Club coordinator Rachel at 215-946-0400. This month’s book:  \nThe Good Earth – By: Pearl S. Buck \nThis tells the poignant tale of a Chinese farmer and his family in old agrarian China. The humble Wang Lung glories in the soil he works\, nurturing the land as it nurtures him and his family. Nearby\, the nobles of the House of Hwang consider themselves above the land and its workers; but they will soon meet their own downfall.\nHard times come upon Wang Lung and his family when flood and drought force them to seek work in the city. The working people riot\, breaking into the homes of the rich and forcing them to flee. When Wang Lung shows mercy to one noble and is rewarded\, he begins to rise in the world\, even as the House of Hwang falls.

SUMMARY:Monthly Book Club: "Stealing Secrets: How a Few Daring Women Deceived Generals\, Impacted Battles. And Altered the Course of the Civil War" - By H. Donald Winkler
This month’s book: \nStealing Secrets: How a Few Daring Women Deceived Generals\, Impacted Battles. And Altered the Course of the Civil War – By: H. Donald Winkler \nThe clever\, devious\, daring women who helped turn the tides of the Civil War \nDuring America’s most divisive war\, both the Union and Confederacy took advantage of brave and courageous women willing to adventurously support their causes. These female spies of the Civil War participated in the world’s second-oldest profession–spying–a profession perilous in the extreme. The tales of female spies are filled with suspense\, bravery\, treachery\, and trickery. They took enormous risks and achieved remarkable results–often in ways men could not do. These are the bold\, untold stories of women shaping our very nation. Stepping out of line and into battle\, these women faced clandestine missions\, treason\, and death\, all because of their passionate commitment to their cause. \nThese are the unknown Civil War stories you need to hear.As stated on the grave marker of Union spy Elizabeth Van Lew:\n“She risked everything that is dear to man–friends\, fortune\, comfort\, health\, life itself.”

SUMMARY:PA Governors' Panel & Lunch
DESCRIPTION:Get your Tickets HERE.\nThroughout 2018\, Pennsbury Manor is commemorating the 300th anniversary of the death of William Penn\, the founder and first governor of Pennsylvania. Reaching across government\, civic affairs\, religion\, cultural diversity\, and the natural world\, Penn’s legacy is significant and worthy of review and celebration. The commemoration of Penn’s legacy will culminate with the first-ever Governors’ Panel Program on September 29th. Former and present Pennsylvania governors will convene for the first time ever on the historic grounds of Penn’s country estate in Bucks County\, to discuss and shine the figurative spotlight on the gubernatorial challenge of balancing the needs of a diverse demographic\, religious\, cultural\, and environment-conscious Commonwealth. We invite you to be a part of this historic program and help support Penn’s legacy for future generations. Portion of program proceeds will go to the creation of the “William Penn Scholarship Fund” for Title 1 schools. \nIndividual Tickets – $185 \nCouple Tickets – $350 \nYour ticket includes three (3) course lunch served and admission to a limited edition special exhibit featuring rare and never before seen collections from the PA State Archives and PA State Museum. Portion of your ticket is tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law. Please consulate your tax advisor for details. For Group rates and Sponsorship opportunities\, contact Sarah Rudich at 215-946-0400 or at c-srudich@pa.gov \n
