SUMMARY:Telling the Whole Story: Interpreting Difficult Histories for America 250
DESCRIPTION:As we prepare for America’s 250th anniversary\, museums and historic sites have a critical role to play in telling a fuller\, more inclusive story of our nation’s founding. This half-day workshop is designed to help rural and local history organizations navigate and interpret the complex—and often uncomfortable—topics of race\, religion\, and nation-making in ways that are thoughtful\, honest\, and community-centered. \nJoin us for an engaging\, practical session featuring regional leaders who are actively tackling these themes in their own institutions: \n\nRace — Shirley Lee Corsey\, Director of Gather Place Museum\, will explore how museums can engage with the legacies of race and racism in our founding stories and local communities.\nNation-Making — Doug Miller from Pennsbury Manor will guide participants through the complexities of defining “America” in 1776 and who was included (and excluded) from that vision.\nReligion — Devin Manzullo-Thomas\, director of the Sider Institute for Anabaptist\, Pietist\, and Wesleyan Studies and author of Exhibiting Evangelicalism: Commemoration\, Conservative Christianity\, and Religion’s Presence of the Past\, will discuss how museums can discuss issues of faith\, spirituality\, and ecclesiology around the 250th anniversary of America.\n\nThis workshop will include group discussions\, real-life examples\, and actionable tools to help you lead conversations at your site with confidence and care. \n  \nTickets: \nFREE For RHC Members \n$25 NON-MEMBERS

SUMMARY:In Pursuit: Philadelphia and the Making of America
DESCRIPTION:NEW DATE DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER:\nPlease join us for a film and conversation examining how Philadelphia’s past and present continue to shape the American story: \nEpisode 1 of In Pursuit: Philadelphia and the Making of America examines the earliest foundations of freedom in the region that would become Philadelphia. Long before the city’s founding\, the Lenape\, known as the “the Original People\,” lived at liberty along the forests and inlets of the mid-Atlantic coast. Their way of life was profoundly disrupted by decades of European encroachment\, displacement\, and disease. \nThe episode then turns to the arrival of Quaker visionary William Penn\, whose pursuit of religious freedom promised coexistence and tolerance. Yet in a colony already entangled with slavery\, this program asks a critical question: could ideals of freedom truly take root in compromised soil? \nThrough film and conversation\, Episode 1 invites audiences to reconsider how America’s earliest freedoms were imagined and who they were never meant to include.

SUMMARY:In Pursuit: Philadelphia and the Making of America
DESCRIPTION:NEW DATE DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER:\nPlease join us for a special film and conversation examining how Philadelphia’s past and present continue to shape the American story. Tours through the manor will not be available today due to us being short-staffed\, but the grounds will be open for free from 12-5 pm. \nEpisode 2 Overview: Land (1700–1763)\nEpisode 2 of In Pursuit: Philadelphia and the Making of America explores how land became both promise and pressure in colonial Pennsylvania. As religious freedom draws waves of immigrants to Philadelphia’s port\, the colony’s growth depends on one critical condition: land must be sold to sustain settlement and repay mounting debts. Yet much of that land has not been formally acquired from Lenape sachems through treaty. \nAs economic strain intensifies\, the episode examines how the Penn family—now led by William Penn’s sons—grapples with the moral and political consequences of expansion. Will they uphold their father’s vision of coexistence\, or sacrifice principle for profit? Through film and conversation\, Episode 2 invites audiences to consider how land\, power\, and broken promises shaped Philadelphia—and set enduring patterns in the making of America. \n** Please sign-up to reserve your spot at this link. \n
