Come join us in celebrating the birthday of Pennsylvania!  We’ll be demonstrating plantation crafts and offering tours of the Manor House.  Best of all, it’s free!  (King Charles II of England granted the charter of Pennsylvania to William Penn in March of 1681.)

Sheepshearing & Historic Trades

We shear our sheep the old-fashioned way!  Come out and watch the fun as our shearer uses hand clippers to peel a potential sweater, blanket, or pair of mittens off our obliging sheep.  Our colonial craftsmen will also be demonstrating their skills.

Living History Theater:  Tea in the Formal Garden

Feel free to chat with Pennsbury residents and neighbors over a cup of tea.  Our guests are most agreeable and would love to engage you in conversation about life in the colony and abroad.  Reservations are required.  Seatings at 1:00, 2:15, & 3:30.

Open Hearth Cooking:  17th-Century Banquetting Foods

The Pennsbury Manor volunteer cooks will be preparing foods for the final course of a feast – the sweets.  Sugar will abound as sweetmeats (desserts) including sugar plate goblets, candied flowers, and jumbals will be prepared.

Adult Workshop

Pennsbury’s herb garden will be lush and fragrant with its full summer bounty.  Come learn how the Penn household would have used herbs for cooking, cosmetics and medicine.  Get tips from the past (and from our gardeners) about how to best grow and use herbs here in modern Pennsylvania.  Come explore the practicalities of herb gardening and get some plants to take home as well!

A symmetrically arranged first course as presented to William Penn and his guests will be on display.  Volunteer cooks will demonstrate the preparation of 17th-century receipts (recipes) that would be part of the first course.

Tired of the typical everyday activities?  Bring your family of gardeners (novice or experienced) to Pennsbury for an evening of gardening (17th-Century style) that the whole family will enjoy.

Living History Theater:  Germantown Protest of 1688

Francis Daniel Pastorius and three others brought a formal protest against slavery to the Germantown Meeting.  Sit in on ht historic Quaker meeting as slave owners and early abolitionists share their views.

Pennsbury Manor volunteer cooks will demonstrate the cheesemaking process from rennet, buttermaking, and prepare Gulielma Penn’s receipt for chesstarts as well as other 17th-century receipts (recipes) from dairy products.

Just for Families:  Colonial Cooking

The whole family can pitch in to help prepare some of Gulielma Penn’s recipes (or “receipts” as she called them)!  We’ll be cooking over an open fire, but you’ll also learn how to make your own complete William Penn meal at home. (not recommended for children under 6 years old)

Manor Fair

Join our many 17th-century fairgoers as they trade goods, secure necessities for daily life in the Pennsylvania wilderness, and (dare we say it?) indulge in a cornucopia of worldly delights.  Mingle with costumed vendors, craftspeople, tradesmen, entertainers, hucksters, and the usual motley riffraff.  Since with this rabble there’s sure to be some trouble a-brewing, we’ve a colonial court to assure justice is sure and swift.  Sit back and enjoy… juggling, hurdy-gurdy and bagpipe.  Or join in on everything from paper making, cornhusk doll making, and quill pen writing, to country dancing!

Open Hearth Cooking:  The Bake Oven

The firing of the bake oven was an entire day’s work.  The Pennsbury Manor volunteer cooks will demonstrate the baking of breads, coffins, gret cakes, pyes, tarts, and the use of the slack oven for drying as the heat retained in the oven drops.

Your presence is requested at the marriage of John Sotcher, the steward at Pennsbury Manor, to the Penn's head housekeeper, Mary Lofty.  Observe late 17th-century Quaker wedding customs, sign the marriage certificate, watch the cooks prepare the wedding feast, and chat with William & Hannah Penn and the other wedding guests.

Holly Nights

Experience the enchantment of Pennsbury by candlelight!  A community tradition for over 25 years, this joyous feast for the senses offers crackling fires, hot-mulled cider, dancing shadows, and the merry sounds of carolers strolling the grounds.  So gather friends and family.  Come toss a green sprig on our Yule log bonfire, make your wish for the coming new year.  Step back into the glow of torches, candles, and luminaries…the bustle of colonial craftspeople (always happy to chat, mind you!)…the good cheer of noels and wassailing songs … and – if Old Man Winter wills it – the crunch of frosty pathways underfoot.
